C3S decadal forecast service workshop

On February 25 - 26th, 2019, we will attend a scoping workshop to discuss development of a decadal forecast service at the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The aim of the workshop is to discuss the user needs and the state of play from the scientific and operational climate prediction communities for the decadal timescale. The workshop will include presentations and discussion on the following topics:

  • State of current research in decadal prediction
  • Current operational decadal prediction activities, including those in a pre-operational setting
  • Current user-activities addressing the decadal climate timescale
  • Technical components of a decadal service
  • Opportunities and risks for decadal forecast service implementation

In this context, we will share our expertise in developing such a decadal forecast service in the the H2020 CLARA project.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) is part of the European Union's Copernicus Programme, which is a comprehensive earth observation and monitoring program. C3S is aimed specifically at providing reliable and accurate information about the past, present, and future states of the climate in Europe and across the world. It supports a wide array of activities ranging from policy-making and business operations to informing the general public about climate change.

Decadal climate predictions, also referred to as near-term climate predictions, are forecasts of the climate system's state over the next one to a few decades, typically up to 10 years ahead. They occupy the temporal middle ground between weather forecasts, which cover days to weeks, and long-term climate projections, which look several decades to centuries ahead. Decadal predictions, or decadal forecast services, aim to provide information on climate conditions in the relatively near future, considering both natural climate variability and human-induced changes.

Decadal climate predictions are a relatively new but rapidly evolving field. A decadal forecast service will be an essential tool for bridging the gap between weather forecasts and long-term climate projections, offering valuable guidance for short- to medium-term planning and decision-making.
